Everyone knows the northern Riviera — Glyfada and its open-air cinemas, the marinas at Alimos and Floisvos, Vouliagmeni and its warm mineral lake. Far fewer keep driving. Past the fiftieth kilometre the coast road thins, the traffic falls away, and the Saronic turns a paler, cleaner blue. This is where Plaza Resort sits — on the sandy curve of Anavyssos, at the quiet end of the Athenian Riviera. Close enough to Athens to matter; far enough to forget it.
The grounds
Los jardines
By daylight the resort reads as one long, low line against the sea — no marble theatre of an atrium, no queue of supercars at the door. A modernist building set back behind a garden of old olive and tamarisk, and a twenty-five-metre pool a few steps from the sand. The luxury here is space and quiet, not spectacle.
The beach, and the position
La playa y su emplazamiento
In front of the hotel lies the bay of Anavyssos — a Blue Flag beach, shallow and calm, with a water-sports school for the afternoons and rows of loungers that run right down to the waterline. Geography is what makes this address: less than an hour behind you, the Acropolis and the noise of Athens; twenty minutes ahead, Cape Sounio. You feel held exactly between the two.
Then the hour that empties the beach — the sun drops behind the headland, the pool goes to copper and rose, and for a while nobody says very much.
The room to ask for
La habitación que hay que pedir
Ask for a sea-facing room, and ask for a higher floor — the third over the second. The rooms are calm and unfussy, wood and leather and a good balcony; the point is that balcony at the blue hour, when the gulf goes from silver to ink and the first lights come on across the bay.
After dark
Al anochecer
After dark, the garden does its quiet work. The olives are uplit low, the stone paths thread down through the trees toward the sound of water, and the walk from dinner to the sea becomes its own small ceremony. Across the water, the village keeps its lights on late: fishing boats, a string of tavernas, the whole bay reflected the length of the sea.
The evenings
Las veladas
Dinner is at Blue, the Mediterranean table, and the long unhurried breakfast at Ivory; a drink belongs at the Ocean Bar as the piano starts on the terrace and the light goes soft over the trees. Or leave the grounds altogether and walk into Anavyssos for a fish taverna on the seafront — the just-caught, paper-tablecloth, un-hotel evening this coast has always done best. Plaza is a member of Great Hotels of the World, but it wears the badge lightly, which is precisely the appeal.
Why come this far south
Por qué venir tan al sur
And then the reason to be here at all. Cape Sounio is twenty minutes down the road; time it for the last light, when the Temple of Poseidon turns gold and the coaches have gone. Then drive back up the coast, kick the sand off, and let the Riviera go quiet.
